Famous Filming Locations in the United Kingdom

The Real Travel Book Shop

13 Blenheim Crescent | Notting Hill | United Kingdom

The Real Travel Book Shop Location

The real travel bookshop was the inspiration behind the travel bookshop in the film. While the interior of the bookshop in the movie was filmed on a studio set, the real bookshop appears in many ways almost identical. The shop didn't appear in the film but it is worth tracking down the shop which is still trading and frequently busy.

The Notting Hill Bookshop is just a short walk from Portobello Road and many of the other locations. They have a large stock of relevant new travel books and a selection of Notting Hill related gifts.

House With The Blue Door

Westbourne Park Road | Nottinghill | United Kingdom

House With The Blue Door Location

Probably the most memorable location in this film is the blue door to William Thacker's home. Based in the heart of Notting Hill, just a few yards from the street market, the original door was eventually auctioned and sold, replaced with a black door.

A blue door has now been put back in place and still attracts visitors even today having photos and selfies outside. The building is a private residence and so it is recommended that should you visit not to intrude on their privacy but many people are happy to have a photo on the pavement and respect the residents.

The interior of the building in the film was on-set at the studios and so the interior of the building doesn't bare any resemblance to the film but the iconic door is definitely a must-visit.

She's Filming On Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath | London | United Kingdom

She's Filming On Hampstead Heath Location

One of the most beautiful and memorable scenes in the movie is when William (Hugh Grant) visits Kenwood House and grounds in Hampstead Heath to visit Anna (Julia Roberts) who is filming, on William's unrealised advice, a Henry James production.

The ground themselves are open to the public and makes a great day when the sun is shining. The building itself, Kenwood House, holds a world-class art collection and is free to enter during opening hours in the day. Hampstead Heath is a short trip from the Notting Hill area by transport.

Daniel Cleaver's Loft Apartment

Clink Wharf Apartments, Clink Street, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Daniel Cleaver's Loft Apartment Location

Daniel Cleaver's plush loft apartment is based in Clink Street, just a short walk from Bridget's flat and Borough Market. Memorable for Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) leaning out of the window asking Bridget to come up but for her to only catch him with another woman, Lara (Lisa Barbuscia) from the New York office.

This busy tall clean narrow lane is based along side the river Thames and boasts cafe's and small shops. Given it's close proximity to many of the other Bridget Jones locations this is worth a visit, even if only to grab a coffee in one of the small cafe's and watch the world go by.

It is worth noting that Clink Wharf Apartments are private residence and the residents privacy should be respected.

Shopping at the Market - Late Night Walk Home

Borough Market, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Shopping at the Market - Late Night Walk Home Location

When Bridget shops for her birthday meal she uses Borough Market, just a few yards from her fictional flat on Bedale Street. This real working market is also in the scene where she walks home in her bunny outfit, sad after discovering at Daniel Cleaver's loft apartment that he has been seeing an American woman, Lara. She walks through the market in the late evening with market traders moving stock in the background.

Borough Market is still a thriving traditional indoor market on the south side of the river Thames in central London and is a great location to visit given it's proximity to The Globe Tavern. This is definitely worth a visit if you want to see one of these thriving markets.

The pub still operates and is always busy after a hard working London day. The final scene of series two, where the team have just pulled off the biggest con of their careers, are having to run from the hotel without paying the bill because Danny used a 'bent credit card'. The scene was filmed around St. Alban's Court, a small lane that runs under modern buildings within the heart of the financial district in the City of London. The Accident With The Orange Juice Location

One of the first early well known scenes in the film where Will (Hugh Grant) and Anna (Julia Roberts) bump into each other with Will spilling cups of orange juice down Anna's top. This corner scene is based right outside what is now a well known coffee shop chain cafe.

Right on the corner of the famous Portobello Road and Westbourne Park Road this is a great time to grab a coffee and watch the very busy Portbello Road hustle and bustle of residents, workers, tourists and some amazing buskers. Ianto's Shrine - The Hub Door

Mermaid Quay | Cardiff | United Kingdom

Ianto's Shrine - The Hub Door Location

Based in Cardiff's beautiful waterfront location Mermaid Quay, Ianto's Shrine celebrates the character Ianto Jones who met his fictional death in series three. The shrine contains messages and gifts from some of Ianto's most hard core fans; in fact someone once hung a whole suit on it though this has long gone. The shrine covers the filming location for the exterior of the Hub Door and while it is barely visible due to the quantity of fan messages attached to the shrine the back of the door can still be seen if you take a sneaky peak through the wooden wall on the boardwalk incline to the side of the shrine.

While this location is probably for the hard core Torchwood and Ianto fan it is a great location to visit where you can take advantage of some of the shops, coffee shops, restaurants and bars in Mermaid Quay and the shrine is just a short walk from the Doctor Who Experience.

The Shrine is publicly accessible at all times, there is no entry fee. On very rare occasions the boardwalk can be temporarily taped off during times of high water but it still viewable from the upper walkway.

The Lexington Hotel

30 Gresham Street, City of London | London | United Kingdom

The Lexington Hotel Location

The Hustle crew during this series lived at the fictional Lexington Hotel in London. All the exterior shots of the hotel, including the reception where the crew are arrested at the end of episode 6 for theft at the Guildhall Gallery, was filmed at number 30 Gresham Street in the financial district in the City of London.

While the building is in fact an office block rather than a hotel, this location gives you an excellent opportunity to explore the historic and modern district and may be a sneaky photo at the entrance to 'The Lexington'. If you visit during weekdays the area is likely to be bustling with business people and may be a few stock market traders while at the weekend the area is likely to be near deserted. The area is a small concentration of bars, restaurants, a selection of shops and gyms though we recommend a weekday for these as many close during the weekend when the workers have finished for the week.

MI6 Secret Intelligence Service Building

MI6 Secret Intelligence Service Building Location

A staple of the modern Bond films is the fictional MI6 building which is also the real MI6 building exterior in London. While it may have been subject to an explosion in the Bond movie Skyfall the building is still very much in place and appears in Spectre during filming on the river. The Final Kiss and Mont Blanc Diary Shop

Cornhill | City of London | United Kingdom

The Final Kiss and Mont Blanc Diary Shop Location

When Mark suddenly leaves Bridget's flat, confused and briefly without shoes, Bridget runs after Mark, finally finding him outside a shop with a new diary in hand with snow on the ground.

While in the film Bridget ran through a few streets, in reality this location is around a mile or so from Bridget's flat. Based in the heart of the historical finance district in The City of London, on the corner of Cornhill and the Royal Exchange Buildings path, this is a great place to take in some of London's historic buildings including the Bank of England and not far from the Guildhall Art Gallery. The building where Mark Darcey appears with a diary in hand is the Mont Blanc shop and also contains many other well known premium brands.

If visiting on a working week day you're likely to see many suits and business people while at weekends and bank holidays the location can be next to deserted with even near-by cafe's closing. The nearest tube station is Bank and is accessibly by local bus or London cab.

The London Underground Tube Station

Aldwych Disused Station | London | United Kingdom

The London Underground Tube Station Location

The scenes at a London underground tube station in Mr Selfridge are all filmed on-location at the disused Aldwych Station (formerly Strand) in London. This station is actually used in many films and television programmes and as such it's well maintained. While the station is quite a long walk from the real Selfridges store it does have some interesting history including sections of corridors and stairwells that were never finished or put into use as well as its use as a shelter during world war II.

Tours of the disused Aldwych Underground Station are available on certain dates. Note that accessibility is resticted due to staircase only access and lifts are permanently out of service. Appropriate footware is needed and opening times may be restricted during on-location filming periods.

Searching for the Hidden Street (Face The Raven)

Hills Street and Westgate Street | Cardiff City Centre | United Kingdom

Searching for the Hidden Street (Face The Raven) Location

During the episode Face The Raven, The Doctor, Clara and Rigsy search for a street that is hidden from view by creating distraction. Filming was carried out in Cardiff City Centre during a busy week day. In Hills Street between St Davids 2 shopping centre and St Davids Hall Jenna Coleman films various takes counting her steps down Hill Street with many extras dotted about while Pete Capaldi spent time signing autographs and talking to the fans. Another scene was filmed around Westgate Street and the Arcades.

There are plenty of shops, bars and cafes around the city centre as well as the older photogenic arcades that can be found between The Hayes and St Mary Street where you're likely to recognise many scenes from the series.

Hills Street and Westgate Street are public areas open all hours. Hills Street is pedestrian access only. Both areas are a short walk from Cardiff Central Station and various bus stops.

The Quaint Village in the English Countryside

Surrey | Shere | United Kingdom

The village scenes around Iris's home are set on-location at the village of Shere in Surrey, England. Sadly Iris's cottage in the film doesn't exist anymore. The exterior shots were made with a purpose built cottage in a field which has since been dismantled.

The small village of Shere is a quiet beautiful typical English village and has been used for many film sets due to it's historical feel. While this location will suit those who enjoy the country-side you also have access to Guilford town just 7 miles away.

The American Diner

Mermaid Quay | Cardiff Bay | United Kingdom

The American Diner Location

In the final episode of Series 9, 'Hell Bent', The Doctor meets an waitress identical to Clara in a Nevada American Diner. Neither Clara or The Doctor recognise each other.

The scene was filmed at Eddies Diner in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay. The cafe was closed for filming with a large background image of a desert scene hung facing into the cafe as a backdrop to give the cafe the impression of being set in the Nevada Desert in America using a large sunlight studio lamp. During this time the surrounding cafes and resturants remained open and fan's camped out in Starbucks outside tables watching, with a camera in hand, for a glimpse of The Doctor or Clara.

Mermaid Quay is a great place to visit for Doctor Who fans who can also visit The Doctor Who Experience in walking distance and may be stop for lunch at the diner which is open all year round.

Jack's Childhood Home in the 51st Centry

The Waterguard Restaurant and Bar, Mermaid Quay | Cardiff Bay | United Kingdom

Jack's Childhood Home in the 51st Centry Location

In the dramatic episode Adam, Series 2, Jack Harkness returns to his childhood home in Boeshane Village set in the 51st Century. Filming was difficult as there was a very narrow field of view they could shoot around the building. Any further left or right and the full view of the bay and it's tourists would easily fall in shot.

The Waterguard Restuarant and Bar was used for the exterior shots of Jack's home. The bar, which is an independant brewery, has a long stretch of grass and benches which is great for a drink on long hot summer days and evenings. It is a mixure of an old stone built docks building with post-modern extension and interior. It is open all year round though is usually busier during summer months.

There is pay and display parking right outside though this is sometimes restricted or closed during the food festival weekend. The nearest railway station is Cardiff Bay, about ten minutes walk and regular buses run from Cardiff Central station and the city centre.

Opening times can be found on The Waterguard TripAdvisor page.

Water Tower and The Invisible Lift to the Base

The Water Tower, Rhod Dahl Plass, Mermaid Quay | Cardiff Bay | United Kingdom

Water Tower and The Invisible Lift to the Base Location

The tall mirror water tower that sits at the north end of Rhod Dahl Plass marks the entrance to the Torchwood Institute. Standing at 70 feet with water running down it's surface the tower is a great attraction in the large open space in front of the impressive Wales Millennium Centre.

The water tower is at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. The water tends to be switched off during winter months but is usually running through the summer and is open to the public at all times. Cool your hands or get a fresh spray of water on a hot day at the foot of the tower. Find the correct stone and may be you'll find the entrance to the hub.

There is pay and display parking near the Norwegian Church or a multistory carpark about 2 minutes walk from the location. The nearest station is Cardiff Bay just a few minutes walk and buses run from the city centre regulary.

The tower is in a public area and there is no fee.

The Selfridge's Country Home

Dorset | Highcliffe Castle, Highcliffe | United Kingdom

The Selfridge's Country Home Location

At the height of Harry Selfridge's success he rented Highcliffe Castle in Dorset as his family home. He had dreams of building his own castle that was set to be the largest in the world but this never came to fruition and instead, in true Harry Selfridge style, spent £25,000 on improvments to the castle in 1925 despite being a tenant.

Filming for the show took place at the real Highcliffe Castle set in stunning grounds in Highcliffe. The castle is rich in history including many famous royal visitors. There are many events held at the castle, it has it's own gift shop and guided tours are available provided by voluteers. Highcliffe Castle is a great place for a full day out as well as visiting some of the local attractions of Christchurch and Bournmouth which is a short drive or train ride away.

For further details including events, history, opening dates and times visit the official Highcliffe Castle website;

The nearest railway station is Hinton Admiral Station which is around a 20 minute walk. Trains are available from London Waterloo. Regular buses run from the station and around Highcliffe, see; https://www.bybus.co.uk/routes/

Filming the Exterior of Selfridges Store

Kent | Chatham Historic Dockyard, Chatham | United Kingdom

Filming the Exterior of Selfridges Store Location

The exterior filming of the Selfridges store, while extremely convincing, is not filmed at the real Oxford Street location due to it's always-busy nature. Instead the exterior shots are filmed at Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent, also home to many other filming locations such as Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Jekyll and Hyde and Grantchester.

The dockyard is full of cobbled streets and buildings from the Georgian and Victorian era to explore. Features include The Railway Workshop picnic and play, The Victorian Ropery, Steam, Steel and Submarines dockyard story, Dockyard Shop, Wheelwright's Restaurant, RNLI Lifeboat Collection as well as the many events that are available such as the Call the Midwife filming location tours.

You can find more information including opening times and dates at the official Chatham Historic Dockyard website;

http://www.thedockyard.co.uk

We suggest getting in touch to find out what filming tours are available which run at certain times. The nearest railway station is Chatham Station with a connecting bus available to and from the Dockyard. See the official site for detailed information.

The Selfridg's London Home

Kensington Gore, Kensington | London | United Kingdom

The Selfridg's London Home Location

The exterior shots for the fictional version of the Selfridge's London home is set at the gloriously detailed building, once belonging to Royal College of Organist's, just opposite the The Royal Albert Hall in Kensington, Central London. This really is a must see location given all the buildings in the area. If you're planning on visiting the real Selfridges then you can take a walk through Hyde Park over to Oxford Street which is around a 30 minute walk or splash out on a black cab and arrive in style in just a few minutes. You may also wish to visit the Royal Albert Hall which houses many iconic and world famous live music and orchestral productions throughout the year.

You can find out more information about the building and filming at this location on the Royal Albert Hall website where you can find an interesting account of the history of the building and filming;

http://www.royalalberthall.com/about-the-hall/news/2014/january/harry-gordon-selfridges-hall-prizegivings/

The film location building is on a public road which is open at all times except during any road closures but please note that the building is now a private house of residence and we encourage people to respect the privacy and environment. There is no access to the interior which bares no connection to the series. Filming of the interior took place at the studios.

The nearest underground railway stations are South Kensington and Gloucester Road, and a little further Knightsbridge and High Street Kensington.

Bridget's Flat

8 Bedale Street, Southwark | Southwark, London | United Kingdom

Bridget's Flat Location

It was Bridget's own flat above the pub in Diary and Edge of Reason and even if the front door has changed not alot else has. It's still Bridget's home where she can dwell in her own sorrow of still being a singleton, even if a little wiser.

The outside of the flat is a great place to visit while in London. It's situated as part of The Globe pub which is nearly always vibrant with customers flooding out onto the street on sunny days. A good place to grab a drink or visit the indoor food market, which appears in the first film, that is literally across the road along with the famous Darcy - Cleaver fight at the restaurant which is now a wine merchants.

One of the most memorable scenes from Bridget Jones's Baby is the music festival, hinted to be Glastonbury, and includes a cameo apperance of Ed Sheeran. We see Bridget struggle in the muddy fields but the scenes weren't filmed at Glastonbury but in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, England.

Windsor Great Park is a great place to visit including natural beauty and horticultural displays all year round, valley gardens, Virginia Waters, the deer park and the incredible Windsor Castle amongst many other attractions. Are you going to step outside or am I going to have to drag you?

The Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, The Serpentine, Hyde Park | London | United Kingdom

Are you going to step outside or am I going to have to drag you? Location

In the second Bridget Jones movie we see the second fight between Daniel Clever (Hugh Grant) and Mark Darcey (Colin Firth) at The Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park. Mark asks Daniel, "Are you going to step outside or am I going to have to drag you?" Daniel simply replies "I think you're going to have to drag me." before the scene cutting to outside and the pair bursting through the doors. The fight takes place around Kensington Gardens in Hyde Park, starting at The Serpentine Gallery and ending at the Italian Gardens.

Hyde park is a wonderful place to visit while you're in London whether on a hot sunny summers day or to take in the glorious golden brown trees and leaves during Autumn. Hyde Park is open to the public. Bridget drags a christmas tree through the market

Borough Market, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Bridget drags a christmas tree through the market Location

The filming location of Borough Market in London, just south of the river Thames, plays a consistent and telling part through each of the Bridget Jones movies. In Bridget Jones's Baby we see Bridget dragging a huge Christmas tree all on her own. The scene was filmed in the summer with the crew creating a snowy christmas market.

There is a great reason to visit the live market, one of the few surviving traditional markets in the city centre, that is aside from the experience it is also across the road from the door of Bridget's flat scene, always worth a visit to the traditional pub The Globe which is part of the same building which also shares the same street as the fight scene from the original Diary movie.

Definitely one to find on your itenery.

We see Mark Darcey in a court scene in the film and what a location to film in. The scene was filmed at The Supreme Court in Westminster, London, just around the corner from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. A Swim In The Pond Location

In the film we see Donald bathing and swimming in his local Pond but this isn't as strange an occurence in Hampstead Heath as it may seem. Pond swimming in one of the many dedicated outdoor bathing ponds is a popular activity.

Ponds include the mixed pond at the southern end of the Heath, Highgate Men's Bathing Pond, the Kenwood Ladies' Bathing Pond at the east-side and the Parliament Hill Lido in the far south east corner. Cost is just a few of pounds, depending on time of day, which goes towards the upkeep of the swimming facilities. If you fancy this off-beat activity bring your swimming bathers and bravery for the low temperature of the water.

Busking in Covent Garden

Covent Garden | London | United Kingdom

Busking in Covent Garden Location

Covent Garden is a vibrant filming location for the film, specifically when we see James being abused by an onlooker in the corner of the Covent Garden Square.

Covent Garden is a wonder location where cafes and restaurants surround the central covered building with flame heaters keeping customers warm on winter nights and warmer summer evenings.

It is home to street entertainment from talented buskers that are usually set near the Apple store and street performers that take the make shift pavement stage outside the historic St. Paul Church; some of which have become world famous. These performances usually happen throughout the day and into the evening.

The Covent Garden underground station, which is a very short walk from the square, is one of London's deepest underground stations. Unlike many of the underground stations Covent Garden has lifts rather than escalators and the old spiral staircase for those brave and fit enough to attempt it.

Covent Garden is also home to the Royal Opera House, Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Transport Museum and if you fancy a London ale in a traditional London Pub with glossy brass trays on the bar, you'll have plenty of choice in the side streets just off the square. With this compact location you'll be spoilt for choice.

The location can be found by taking the underground tube train to Covent Garden, or if you wish to avoid the queues for the lifts, take the tube to Leicester Square which is a 5-10 minute walk. Have a map! London Black Cabs can also be hailed off the street to take you.
