Bridget Jones's Diary

London

Bridget Jones

The film burst onto cinema screens in 2001 to great success solidifying Colin Firths movie career, removing Hugh Grants typecast character and proving Renée Zellweger's excellent English accent. Set mainly in Central London and the south east counties of England the film brings some of the most excellent and iconic locations; many with plenty to do while you're there.

As an avid movie hiker and Bridget Jones fan you won't be short on things to do.

Bridget's Flat

8 Bedale Street, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Bridget's Flat Location

Bridget's flat exterior is fictionally above The Globe Tavern, a corner pub in Bedale Street just across the road from Borough Market in the Southwark district of central London.

The area is just like you imagine from the film, gritty city urban with bustling business in the market and the restaurants and shops across the road, famous for the Mark Darcey (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) fight.

The pub still operates and is always busy after a hard working London day. This is a must visit for the Bridget Jones fan for a photo outside the famous black front door to a drink in this old London tavern. While this is on a public street it is advised that you respect the privacy of the occupants of the various buildings in this street.

Daniel Cleaver's Loft Apartment

Clink Wharf Apartments, Clink Street, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Daniel Cleaver's Loft Apartment Location

Daniel Cleaver's plush loft apartment is based in Clink Street, just a short walk from Bridget's flat and Borough Market. Memorable for Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) leaning out of the window asking Bridget to come up but for her to only catch him with another woman, Lara (Lisa Barbuscia) from the New York office.

This busy tall clean narrow lane is based along side the river Thames and boasts cafe's and small shops. Given it's close proximity to many of the other Bridget Jones locations this is worth a visit, even if only to grab a coffee in one of the small cafe's and watch the world go by.

It is worth noting that Clink Wharf Apartments are private residence and the residents privacy should be respected.

Shopping at the Market - Late Night Walk Home

Borough Market, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

Shopping at the Market - Late Night Walk Home Location

When Bridget shops for her birthday meal she uses Borough Market, just a few yards from her fictional flat on Bedale Street. This real working market is also in the scene where she walks home in her bunny outfit, sad after discovering at Daniel Cleaver's loft apartment that he has been seeing an American woman, Lara. She walks through the market in the late evening with market traders moving stock in the background.

Borough Market is still a thriving traditional indoor market on the south side of the river Thames in central London and is a great location to visit given it's proximity to The Globe Tavern. This is definitely worth a visit if you want to see one of these thriving markets.

Information on Borough Market including opening times, latest events and details on it's 1000 year history in Southwark can be found on their official website;

The Greek Restaurant Street Fight

5 Bedale Street, Southwark | London | United Kingdom

The Greek Restaurant Street Fight Location

The famous fight scene between Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). Their fight in the street outside of Bridget's flat takes them into the fictional Greek restaurant across the road and eventually smashing through the window and back into the street, both crawling amongst the glass.

This is a great location as it's just a few yards from Bridget's Flat filming location. The restaurant is currently a wine merchant so why not have a browse while you're there.

Details, including wine tastings and events, can be found at Bedales Wines official website;

Right, I'll just pop to the shop for some ciggies. That zebra crossing. Location

Bridget decides to just 'pop to the shop for some ciggies' while waiting for an interview outside the Royal Courts of Justice on the strand. While that zebra crossing might not be as famous as Abbey Road, if you're a big Bridget fan, you may as well grab a photo if you're visiting the Courts locations or BK News on your Bridget movie hike!

The crossing can be found on The Strand in Charing Cross between the Royal Courts of Justice and BK News.

Big case... featuring someone called Aghani Heaney Location

Bridget is sent to the High Court to get a "hardheaded interview". The location is outside the Royal Courts of Justice on The Strand in Charing Cross, London. A stunning location of architechure, generally quiet on the weekend, if you happen to visit during a high profile case then expect crowds of journalists and photographers hoarding outside, much like in the film, waiting for that all important interview or statement. This particular court is famous for some of the most high profile cases in British history. While you are here you can also visit the crossing and BK News locations.

The Royal Courts of Justice at the strand is a working court. It is open during weekdays. It can be reached by Tube stations Holborn, Chancery Lane and Temple. The court is open to the public over the age of 14, any operational restrictions will be signed such as no camera or in-private.

The Final Kiss and Mont Blanc Diary Shop

Cornhill | City of London | United Kingdom

The Final Kiss and Mont Blanc Diary Shop Location

When Mark suddenly leaves Bridget's flat, confused and briefly without shoes, Bridget runs after Mark, finally finding him outside a shop with a new diary in hand with snow on the ground.

While in the film Bridget ran through a few streets, in reality this location is around a mile or so from Bridget's flat. Based in the heart of the historical finance district in The City of London, on the corner of Cornhill and the Royal Exchange Buildings path, this is a great place to take in some of London's historic buildings including the Bank of England and not far from the Guildhall Art Gallery. The building where Mark Darcey appears with a diary in hand is the Mont Blanc shop and also contains many other well known premium brands.

If visiting on a working week day you're likely to see many suits and business people while at weekends and bank holidays the location can be next to deserted with even near-by cafe's closing. The nearest tube station is Bank and is accessibly by local bus or London cab.

Why not recreate your own movie ending here!
